Crossfit is a great training program. I agree with that 100%. However, I strongly disagree with your assertion that traditional weightlifting is effective only if you take steroids. That just flat isn't true.
I've been lifting weights for almost 10 years. I've never taken steroids, HGH, creatine or anything like that.
I think your impression of "traditional" weightlifting comes from those bodybuilding mags that advocate doing 7 sets to failure on bench press every day -- stupid stuff like that WILL only work if you're on steroids. But I get great results with weight training -- the trick is to learn what you're doing and build a smart program that includes adequate nutrition and plenty of rest.
One of Crossfit's strengths as a program is that they do all of the programming for you and give it to you via the WOD. But if you take the time to learn a bit about lifting weights or even just find a good program online (Beginner Strenth Training Program and W4SB spring to mind), you can get great results with nothing more than smart training and good old fashioned sweat.
