Alabama actually has a state law that makes stopping at makeshift stop signs a legal requirement. As worded, I could technically make my own stop sign, and if someone violated it, they could be charged for it. But in practice, the law really isn't enforced.
Nevertheless, in at least one state, #2 is something you do in fact really have to do.
