Reply to The Hustler's MBA

Tynan, I think this should be in your "Greatest Hits" blog posts.  And you are churning them out, lately.

I guess this just hit a nerve with me because I am an old dog that has a 4 year college degree.  I went to college when it was more affordable (1986-1990) and, I will admit that my degree trained me well in what I wanted to do (broadcast journalism).

But, I predict that as college gets more and more expensive, people are going to start to reject the idea of the traditional degree, not only because of the expense, but because EVERYONE goes to college these days, which in turn waters down the value of the degree itself.

I think you and I will see the day that people demand more of their degrees and demand that they be more focused.  People are going to reject the well-rounded liberal education.  If they want to be business people, they will take business classes and skip the physical education requirements, the English literature requirements, the science requirements, etc., if for no other reason than just the cost of those courses that have nothing to do with what they want to do.  And, if the Universities won't allow that to get a degree, they will come around to it because less and less people will be going to college, which will in turn MAKE the universities change their minds because, at the end of the day, they want people to go to their school and spend money.

Another way to get the Hustler's MBA is to pick something that you like, find a mentor, get a job with that mentor, even if that means picking up that persons laundry, being the night janitor, etc. for minimum wage and making an effort to hang around learn their trade when they are working.

Reply to Love Work

LOVING your posts about work and productivity, mainly because they hit a bullseye with me, right now.  I am the big slacker you mentioned toward the end of the post and whats more is, I really can't afford to be.  Not in the long term, anyway.  I have burned the boats.  Either I will be a success at business or I will be living under an overpass.

I am in the process of eliminating distractions.  I saw in one of the comments in this thread where you were talking about blocking yourself from certain websites.  I am also blocking myself from Facebook, You Tube, RSD Nation and porn during the week.  I will allow myself to go back to the first three during weekends, but porn is blocked permanently.  I am also going to bed at a more reasonable hour during the week and waking up earlier.  I also unplug the TV during the week.

I'm doing better than I was a month ago, but I know I could do even better still.  I think I will also print this out and read it every morning.  God speed to you, Tynan!  Hope I get to meet you in person, someday!  Any idea when you'll be swinging through Austin, again?

The Truth About Success 2 -- Execution Learning From Failure Not Being A Lazy Slug

Great stuff, Tynan!  Very on point because this is something I am struggling with, right now.  One of my favorite talks that Owen Cook ever did had very little to do with pickup.  It was the Secret About Success.  This is a two hour long video, so I understand if you or anyone else reading doesn't want to or have time to go through the whole thing, but a good excerpt runs from 1:07:49 to 1:16:50.

Reply to Literal Self Discipline

Aw! Man! This post hits too close to home! LOL! I feel like I just got scolded by my Dad in an indirect sort of way! haha! Why do I feel like this? BECAUSE I HAVEN'T DONE SHIT ALL DAY! LOL!

Seriously, though, this is something that I've been thinking about a lot, lately. I love the Internet but also realize it can be a huge time waster, if you let it! I recently purchased an Internet filter called Safe Eyes that blocks pretty much anything you want it to block. What I like about it most is that once you set it to block something, you can set up the filter to where you have to call an 800 number to get the admin password to change anything. So, I use it to block porn. LOL. It's sort of like you said, it's not bullet proof, but it's enough of a barrier to consider doing something else with your time. I also set a time limit on it to where I can't log on until 1:30 in the afternoon. This FORCES me to get up and be productive.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I will look into Leechblocker. I've been looking for something that limits my time on certain sites. Facebook is one of them. I don't want to block it entirely, but I also know it's mostly a waste of time.
