I have the predicament of wanting to do everything before I die. Number 234,220 on that list is writing a novel, so we're going to get that one knocked out this month.
Why November? Because it's NaNoWriMo, the unfortunately acronymed National Novel Writing Month. You can go sign up at the web site and pledge to write a 50k word novel in one month. Usually 1 out of 6 people actually finish it. I'll be one of those people. Will you?
I have a pretty cool idea for a story, and I think I'm already a pretty good storyteller. What's really exciting, though, is that writing 50k words apparently makes everyone who completes it a much better writer. Remember the practicing thing from yesterday? Let's practice being good writers. Get ready for some kick ass stories up in this piece.
I'll post bits of the story as I go, and will keep you updated on how my progress is. I have two flights this month so that's a solid 8 hours of story writing time right there.
I ended up not doing it because I had too many projects going on. That said... I just finished writing my own pickup book. The first few people have read it and given rave reviews and soon it will be available for BTYB readers. (Friday or Saturday probably...)
I heard about NaNoWriMo at the end of November last year, and resolved to do it this year. Unfortunately that's not gonna happen anymore. Definitely on my list of things to do though.
Good Luck with yours. I have no doubt you'll complete your novel. Can't wait to read it.
Good luck! That's about 7 pages per day. Not impossible, but definitely not easy. I couldn't do it. And neither could a friend of mine two years ago.
Ok, so I changed my theme again. I kept that last one for a LONG time, but I got a little restless. I'm sad to say goodbye to the awesome cartoon that Kristen drew me, but I had to get this gangsta picture of me up here. I couldn't resist.
I know that there are a few minor issues with the theme (like the fact that I haven't tagged / assigned a category to any of my posts for the past year or so). I'll probably go back and fix that and make it look pretty for you.
The REAL exciting news is that I'm going to be writing features for Gadling.com. Gadling is a travel blog, and I think it's the most popular one on the net. I'll be writing a story every week for them. It's a cool site, so definitely check it out... my favorite posts are the ones by the pilot guy. Very interesting to see behind the scenes there.
After two stalled novel attempts, I've jumped in to National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo. During this month any Tom Clancy, Richard Bachman, or Harry Potter author wannabe can write themselves a novel. All they need is to put 1,667 words on a page each day.
I haven't figured out how to keep my word count that high - as you'll see below - but I have learned a few things so far.
A) Writing takes time.
I did a timed writing and it looks like I'm writing about 35 word per minute (wpm). This means that the entire 50K word project will take almost 24 hours over the course of November. That's a lot of time. There won't be a single other thing I do this month that takes that long. This means that posts like this get a little less attention than they need and that the other things in my life, family and a bit of work, need more focus when I'm doing those things. That said,
B) I can find time.
