The illegal status of drugs in this country has led to gang violence, impurity of drugs, and treatment avoidance among addicts. Drug use wasn't prosecuted as a crime until after the prohibition of alcohol ended. It's led to a massive, bloated prison economy. Something had to take the place of alcohol prohibition. The black untaxed market is thriving. Unfortunately, taxing drugs over, and above any other products (sin taxes) would cause the same problems seen with alcohol, and cigarette tax. These taxes have continued to increase, and they aren't being used for treatment. Treatment would be counter productive to collecting the taxes. People should really wake up, and pay attention to the fact that governments generally aggravate the problems that they are supposedly solving - by design. It's part of the Hegelian dialectical model, or problem-reaction-solution. It would be great if parents were able to think rationally about corruption within our own government. I predict that internet 2 will ultimately be rolled out to protect us from terrorism, or to protect the children.

I really don’t see how anyone can say, (by the greatest stretch of imagination), that the current system is working. It's still not /good/ for you, but it's better than a lot of the other legal crap out there.I've never smoked and never will (I have smoke-related asthma, partially from growing up in such a smoke-rich environment), but I might consider drinking a tea or eating food containing it in small doses, as I've heard it can have a positive effect on the creative mind. The one caveat I would like to add to your article is that certain drugs are illegal because they harm more than the person taking them. If you want to trip on ecstasy, good for you, but if you want to take PCP and start smashing people's windows, that's where I draw the line. Even though I'm not wiccan, I think the adage "Do as ye will an harm ye none" is applicable here. If you want to screw up your own life, feel free, but don't hurt anyone else while you're at it. That's why theft and rape are illegal, after all.

I’ve grown up around habitual cigarette and pot smokers, and I can tell you that pot is probably better for you than cigarettes. How about if we treat our adult citizens like adults and let them make their own choices and live with them?"This. I endorse this. With the possible exception of PCP, which is a drug of which there's (supposedly) examples of it making people violent, but generally I tend to think that we should treat adults like adults and let them decide how they like their entertainment.

“I’d personally be in favor of legalizing ALL drugs. You write a lot about adventure and getting the most out of life. It seems incongruent to me that you would uphold a blanket anti-drug-use policy instead of experimenting, if for no other reason than to see what all the fuss is about. I mean, you did waterboard yourself. If you are as self-disciplined, intelligent and adventurous as you appear to be, it is unthinkable that you will exhaust your life before ever taking a hit or three of Acid(LSD). You’re too smart not to. Do some research. Seriously consider it.Don’t outsmart yourself. With Respect,

Take PCP for example. It makes people want to fight, take off their clothes, and insensitive to any pain to the point they'll smash a car window with their fist because they can't feel it.As an EMT, I see this a lot...it never ends up in the news, but people spazzing out and getting violent happens a lot....the problem with that? It affects other people.Just like drunk driving wouldn't be a problem, if it didn't affect other people.ALSO, it's just bad for society. Looking at it big picture, a country would want its citizens to be more productive so the country is more properous...don't want it to end up like opium problems in China back in the day.AND also, law/government eventually sets mark for what's ethical or not (example: racist segregation laws).."it can't be THAT bad for me if it's legal" thing. Many many don't pay attention to this, but much more do.

Hey man, a few thoughts about the topic.

Certain drugs need to be illegal since by nature they increase the likelihood of violence. legalise ALL drugs. Tax the crap out of them AND an important addition...make ANY crime commited whilst under the influence and/or in response to needing to get more drugs punishable by execution/hard labour to the value of twice the monetary value of lost assets to the victim/s of the crime and/or their family.
Also allow people who are considered legally sane, able and regularly train in the safe use of firearms to carry loaded weapons at will and be able to use them for self-protection and/or reduction of crime. But if you point it you should shoot or be arrested for attempted murder so it's a clear line.
It would be messy and violent for a while...but 2 or 3 generations down the line the average IQ would be higher and people would be a lot more polite.Spend the tax money collected from drugs on IMPLEMENTING the punishment of all crimes. Enforcement of laws is the best deterrant.

Actually I fully agree with you Ty.<br
